Stop it Now! 2010 Conferences

Preventing Child Sexual Abuse - Making it Everybody's Business

Introduction

Stop it Now! UK and Ireland and the Lucy Faithfull Foundation are pleased to host a series of one-day conferences designed to explore some of today’s key issues surrounding child sexual abuse.

We all have a part to play in preventing child sexual abuse – which is why these conferences are open to everyone who works with, or has contact with children or families.

We have partnered with Hampshire Constabulary for the latest event:

Hampshire, July 5 - FULLY BOOKED

Conference Brochure
Booking Form
Directions for Hampshire Police Training Centre, Netley

Aims

The conference aims to explore some of today’s key issues surrounding child sexual abuse:

  • Female sexual abusers – facts and fiction
  • Internet offenders – how the internet is used as part of sexually abusive behaviour
  • Children and young people who display worrying sexual behaviour
  • Developing a comprehensive framework to prevent child sexual abuse

Delegates will complete each workshop. They will hear from specialist speakers who work in the field, learn from the experience of others and share their own experiences. The conference will explore how various roles contribute to preventing child sexual abuse.

The Workshops

Female sexual abusers - facts and fictions

In 2009, media coverage of a series of high profile cases involving women impacted significantly on the public and professional consciousness of female sexual abuse.

One aspect of this publicity was to highlight the lack of professionals’ knowledge that exists regarding this subject and the lack of confidence many professionals experience when faced with a female abuser.

This research based workshop will seek to provide participants with a basic understanding of some of the key issues associated with female abuse including prevalence, victim characteristics, perpetrator characteristics and differences between male and female abusers in order to increase their awareness and their ability to protect and support victims.

Children and young people who display worrying sexual behaviour: an overview of key issues

This workshop aims to highlight some of the key issues relating to the identification, assessment, intervention and care of children and young people with inappropriate or harmful sexual behaviours.

It will focus on both pre-pubescent and post-pubescent children and topics will include:

  • What behaviour is inappropriate or harmful?
  • What are the facts?
  • What are the myths?
  • What works?
  • When should we intervene and how?

It will explore some of the similarities and differences between working with pre-pubescent children and adolescents and the need to ensure our work is developmentally appropriate and does not misuse knowledge and assumptions drawn from work with other age groups.

The workshop is aimed at those who are new to this area of work and those who need to refresh their knowledge. However, it also welcomes experienced practitioners who could contribute to other people’s awareness of this area.

Internet offenders - how the Internet is used as part of sexually abusive behaviour

This workshop will draw on research and our own experience of working with Internet offenders and their families, to explore;

  • facts and figures about pornography and Internet offending;
  • types of Internet offender;
  • research on recidivism and risk of contact offending;
  • typical issues that need intervention/response, including risk management;
  • our clinical experience working with Internet offenders and their partners.

Developing a comprehensive framework to prevent child sexual abuse

Stop it Now! UK and Ireland believes that child sexual abuse is preventable – not inevitable. We also believe that we all have a part to play in preventing abuse – but do you know where your role fits in? Or what gaps in preventative measures there may be in your local area and how you might be able to help fill those gaps?

This workshop will provide you with an opportunity to;

  • explore the need for a comprehensive approach for prevention;
  • identify where your role fits within a comprehensive framework of prevention;
  • identify and discuss the gaps and challenges that exist in preventative services and resources within your local authority area.

Delegate criteria and cost

There is a £50 charge per delegate.
